What works: Mindfulness

Mindfulness is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for helping to prevent depression.

Mindfulness is very simply about bringing your awareness into the present moment and noticing what is going on inside (e.g. emotions/thoughts) and out (e.g. senses).  Mindfulness can be practiced whilst doing a task or nothing at all, it can even be practiced for just a few seconds.

What the evidence says:

  • reduces anxiety and lowers stress levels
  • helps combat depression and low mood
  • lowers levels of fatigue and irratibility
  • imporves memory, creativity and attention span
  • is "at least as good" as medication or counselling for the treatment of depression
